metaLOOK

What is metaLOOK?

A meta-information system for managing raster files, used for efficient searching in metadata and its further processing.

  • Searching metadata of existing photos, videos, and any raster files
  • Custom selection of metadata for searching
  • Adding other photos to the search without source restrictions (microscope, drone, camera, satellite images, orthophotomaps, etc.)
  • Option to edit photos graphically, versioning, adding custom metadata, deleting metadata
  • Read images directly from your computer’s hard drive without the need to import them
  • Work in a user-friendly interface localized into SK/EN/CZ,..
  • Export search results to XLS/CSV

How metaLOOK works?

Find a folder

The application will also search for the metadata of the pictures in subfolders. Without import.

Choose a format

I choose what type of format I want to search using metadata

Edit image

I edit the selected picture. I add attributes to the metadata. Delete metadata. I analyze the photo using AI.

Export

I export the selected metadata structures to XLS for further analysis.

Areas of application of the system

Science and research

Effective management and retrieval of experimental data from microscope images (Carl Zeiss, JEOL, OLYMPUS, TESCAN, etc.), CT devices, and laboratory equipment. Quick access to historical data based on technical metadata (magnification, date, device, operator, etc.). Support for team collaboration – annotation, versioning, and information exchange. Option to export data for further analysis (XLS/CSV). Use of AI to detect defects and anomalies in samples

Landscape management

Efficient intelligent search, management, and analysis of image and geoinformation data based on their metadata, GPS location, time stamp, and image similarity. MetaLOOK is used primarily in the areas of watershed management, landscape monitoring, environmental analysis, and the management and analysis of photographic documentation of field work

upl8

Healthcare

Search assistance from images processed by X-rays, CT scanners, any devices that generate photos/videos Categorization of images by diagnosis, type of examination, location, and physician Search by custom metadata - e.g., type of procedure, anatomical location, date of examination. Option of manual and AI-assisted labeling of findings

upl8

Agriculture

Assisting inspectors in working with large volumes of photos, including determining geographic coordinates and searching through all historical data

upl5

Forestry

Assistance with photo identification, timber harvesting inspections, hunting inspections/p>

Industry

Assistance in identifying photos during quality control on production lines

upl8

Tourism

When searching through a large number of photos from different locations, different sources/cameras/ cameras from a single tool

upl8

Insurance

Help with identifying photos in car insurance claims based on location

Source files.

Carl Zeiss, JEOL, TESCAN, OLYMPUS, LEICA microscopes, etc.

CANON,NIKON, OLYMPUS cameras, etc.

iOS and Android phones

Other devices whose output is a raster file/image: drones, digital X-rays, CT scanners, satellite images, orthophotomaps, scanners, camera systems

CASE STUDY: metaLOOK SW deployment in practice

The Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology STU (FCHPT STU) in Bratislava is one of the leading scientific and research institutions in the field of chemical, food and biotechnology sciences. It focuses on the development, synthesis and analysis of substances, materials and processes using the most modern analytical and spectroscopic technologies. The laboratories at the faculty often store data sets from advanced experiments, which are used to solve research tasks with a high degree of innovative potential.

How was it: before implementation

FCHPT STU researchers faced several key problems in managing image data:

Large amounts of images

Microscopes generated large amounts of images in various formats, which were stored on local disks without central management

Inefficient search

Finding a specific photo could take several hours, Researchers could only search for photos by creation time or part of the file name

Impossibility of filtration

It was not possible to filter photos by metadata (e.g., sample type, project, device)

Without handy tools

There were no tools for graphic editing of images, versioning, commenting, or retrieving images from completed projects

Key features of the solution deployed at the customer’s site:

  • search in metadata of images from CARL ZEISS EVO (TIFF) and JEOL (JPG) microscopes
  • select and combine metadata when searching
  • full-text search and filtering by values or ranges
  • graphical editing of images, versioning and adding your own notes and metadata
  • export metadata to XLS/CSV for further analysis
  • direct work with images from disk without the need for import
  • bulk management of attributes (adding, deleting)
  • support for both WINDOWS and macOS operating systems

Achieved benefits

Faster work

Searching for a single photo has been reduced from hours to minutes.

Versatility

Uniform interface for all image inputs regardless of microscope type and photo source format.

Flexibility

Ability to add custom metadata and analyze historical photos taken with analog microscopes.

Simplicity, Extensibility

Intuitive control even for new users. The software is ready for transition to AI image analysis and integration with databases.
